Rosa Records Newsletter September 2006

It was a busy and exciting summer and as far as we're concerned, it ain't over yet. After lengthy negotiations we succeeded in contracting the one and only Dexateens, that great band from Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Their cd Hardwire Healing will be released this month. For those who don't know the band: they should be mentioned in one sentence with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Slobberbone and the Drive-By Truckers. It is therefore not a coincidence that the band picked DBT-frontman Patterson Hood to produce the album. This is Southern rock with a punk attitude and great songs.

Also very exciting is the self-titled debut by Wheels On Fire, a young band from Athens, Ohio, produced by studio wizard Teddy Morgan. A record that sounds as if the devil is on their tail. These four guys and one girl make rock & roll in the classic sense of the word. Energetic, wild, sexy and reckless. It's a blessing that music can still sound this dangerous. And, as a bonus, all their songs sound like hits. To us, at least.

The first Dutch contribution this summer came from Denvis, boss of the notorious Spades, who with Comin' Home produces a surprising Americana-record. 'Sounds like Southside Johnny in his glory days,' someone said after hearing it and that really hits the nail on the head. Horns that remind you of the great Stax records, catchy songs, a pedal steel and a moving Tom Waits cover.

The other record from the lowlands is Beautiful Trash by The Dam, the new band of our all-time favorite Dutch guitar player, Ron Splinter, who some of you will know from the legendary Outsiders, for which he wrote songs like Touch and Lying All The Time, together with Wally Tax. He found a new partner in crime, singer-songwriter Jerry Turner, with whom he writes songs that are every inch as good as the best Outsiders songs. Timeless music, beautiful trash indeed.

New records to look forward to are Chris Allen's solo album produced by Don Dixon, and the debut of Dutch countryrock innovators Rootsclub, who picked up where Lazy Sunday Dream left off.
