We met Mike Gunther last year through Ben Weaver. He told us that there was a very special musician from St. Paul, Minneapolis, who had just completed the recordings for an album and who was looking for a record deal. He sent us a test pressing and after listening to the first two songs we knew enough. We heard echoes from Robert Johnson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Hank Williams, Captain Beefheart, Tom Waits and there was the traditional battle between right and wrong, between God and the devil. But what we heard most of all was a truly original songwriter, singer and musician. Later Mike told us that there was a time that he contemplated becoming a priest. Thank God, he didn't.
