Bellwether
The Stinging Nettles

Roughly ten years and five records since its inception, Minneapolis-based alt-country band Bellwether presents its fifth full-length album, 'The Stinging Nettles'. The new release follows on the band's previous success, including its notable and innovative 'Home Late' (2000) and last year's '7 & 6'.
'The Stinging Nettles' is a collection of songs that represent an alter-ego for Bellwether, with a strikingly different mood and tone. It includes songs that portray a more lighthearted, innocent band -- with band members operating outside of the parameters and constraints of their genre, and ultimately letting it all loose.
It is a departure from the somewhat stoic minimalistic style of Bellwether's previous efforts. It is tempered with a rollicking, good-timey feel. From tongue-in-cheek bluegrass exercises - on songs like 'Who's Gonna Drive?' - to the more half sober, but straight-up vintage honky tonk document of 'Don't Wanna Go Downtown', the band surveys all of its musical landscape, influences and horizon. The album follows the band's fresh and freewheeling search for something - the past, the present, and maybe ultimately itself.
Since the release of its watershed 'Home Late' album, Bellwether has been warmly received by the alt-country press and its purveyors. They have shared the stage with highly regarded peers including The Jayhawks, Ryan Adams, Golden Smog, Blue Rodeo, and the legendary Ralph Stanley.
